Description: Mr. J. Gaspard Boucher was born on February 3, 1897 in Notre-Dame-du-Lac and died on April 18,1955. After his studies he became an assistant agronomist in Montmagny and then obtained a position as Agronomist for the Department of Agriculture in Quebec. He came to Edmundston in 1920 with his father who had bought the New Royal Hotel.He left his work as agronomist to become the manager of the New Royal Hotel.In 1923 he acquired shares in "Le Madawaska",became its editor-in-chief on March 16,1923, and owner on May 5, 1926. He was elected to the New Brunswick Legislature as a liberal to represent Madawaska in 1935,and became the Deputy-Speaker of the Legislature from 1935-1939. He was re-elected in 1939,and named President of the Executive Council, President of the NB Power Commission from 1940-1949,and then Provincial Secretary-Treasurer from 1949-1952. Mr. Boucher was elected in the federal elections of August 10, 1953 and served as an MP until his death in 1955. On October 7, 1967 the Boucher Bridge was named in his honour.
