Sport in Madawaska

Sport, in Madawaska, dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. The people of this area, despite the complexity of a farming and forestry way of life, seem to have found time to play and practice certain sports.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, sports and games were coordinated around only a few disciplines: athletics, baseball, boxing and hockey. Thereafter, the formation of associations and leagues, and organized tournaments allowed the development of these four major sports in Madawaska. Around 1920, several other sports followed a similar path: horse racing, badminton, tennis, golf, gymnastics and curling . Categories according to age were even developed to meet the needs of the entire population. All this was accompanied by a proportional increase in the interest shown by the players followed by the spectators and the news media. It was thus that swimming, figure skating, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing etc. appeared. Sports became a very important practice for our community, which has developed infrastructures to enable people to recreate better and engage more effectively in their favourite sport. This is how the Baseball Stadium, the Saint Basile Arena, the Golf Club, the Edmundston Forum, Mont Farlagne, the Richelieu and Lion pools saw the light of day in our region.

Madawaska has a rich legacy of teams and individuals who have tasted success and have left a mark on their times. They are the “Treasures” of sport in this area.

Today sport touches the lives of almost all Madawaska residents. Individuals and their families participate; spectators attend events and watch sports on television; sports pages are read daily and entire communities welcome the success of male and female players, and of teams that represent them. In short, sport is an important part of life in Madawaska.
